The General Overseer of The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor E.A Adeboye, has has warned the federal government against going ahead with the proposed social media bill.
Pastor Adeboye who was speaking on Sunday at the RCCG headquarters’during the November Thanksgiving Service with the theme “Better days ahead” cautioned the government against following the chinese example because according to him, the variables are different. Represented at the occasion by the Assistant General Overseer (Admin. & Personnel) Pastor Johnson Odesola, the revered cleric advised that the best the government can do is to ensure that news and features articles on social media are genuine. He explained that attempt to replicate the China example “here in Nigeria is laughable and would not be possible” he said.
He then advised that the government should focus more on making sure the news shared on social media is genuine.
It will be recalled that Nigeria’s minister of Information, Mr. Lai Muhammed last week told the media that the government will regulate social media in order to stop the spread of hate speeches and fake news.
