RACHEAL’S GIFT

PEGASUS REPORTERS, LAGOS | FEBRUARY 25, 2022

“Wake up Racheal!” Shouted James Racheal’s dad
“I’m up Dad! Good morning”. Racheal says as she gets up from bed.
“Your mum is waiting for you downstairs in the kitchen,” He says as he walks out of her room
Racheal quickly gets ready for the day and rushes downstairs to meet her mum
“Good morning mum,” she says
“Good morning dear. Did you sleep well?” her Margaret responds
“Yes mum I slept well”. Racheal replies as she moved towards her mum. “What are we doing today?” She asks
“A friend of mine saw the jewelry you made for me and asks that you make one for her” Margaret tells Rachel
“Really?” Racheal asks and then starts jumping up and down in excitement
“Yes I told her that she would be paying too. So you will be getting paid. How much is to make one of the jewelry?” Says Margaret.
Racheal is an eight-year-old girl. She is the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lawal. Her parents are business owners who encourage their children to learn and acquire skills. Racheal’s brother James Junior, who everyone calls ‘Junior’ is thirteen years and already works in their father’s factory every weekend and holidays.

While Charles, the firstborn who is sixteen and just finished his secondary school education, just finished his third game for mobile phones. Charles loves playing games on his phone. One day their dad told him that if he spent as much time developing the games he played he would be able to make a living from it. That month Charles told his dad he wanted to learn how to make games and he hasn’t stopped since. In fact, his games are on the play store and he makes money now from the most popular one that allows other children to create animations.

Racheal doesn’t want to work in her father’s factory learning how to make serviette and tissue rolls. So, she has been teaching herself to make jewellery using old materials at home that are not needed. The necklace she made from her mum was from old magazines, fabric gum and fishing thread.

“Mum I need to buy fabric gum, necklace hook and cord to string it” Racheal tells her mum
“How much will that cost?” Margaret asks
“I don’t know ma but I will ask Charles. He can help me check the price on google” Racheal replies her mum
“I am already checking the price smallie” Charles tells her
Charles checks some sites on his phone for the price of the things Racheal needs to make the jewelry.
“The total is two thousand naira, but you won’t finish the fabric gum and the cord. It can be used again and again” Charles reminds his sister
“That is true,” their mum says. Turning to Racheal she asks, “so how much do you want to sell the jewellery?”
“Why don’t you check how much the same type of jewellery goes for online before you fix a price for your own product? Junior tells Racheal as she is about to name a price.
“That is a great idea Junior” Their dad say
Charles goes back to his phone to check the price on his phone
He shows the phone to their dad who is sitting beside him.
“Are you kidding me!” their dad exclaims
“how much is it?” Racheal asks expectantly
“Well from what I see here on Jumia, your kind of necklace is seven thousand naira” Charles says
Their mum exclaims and quickly runs out of the kitchen. Everyone looks after her
Before anyone can go after her she comes back with the necklace and earring set.
“Let me see the picture on your phone!” She tells Charles
Charles passes the phone to her. She compares it with the necklace in her hand and reads the description.
“I am going to keep this jewellery in my jewellery box!” she says and hugs Racheal

3 months later
“Racheal! Racheal! Racheal!! Someone shouts from outside the house

Everyone in the house runs outside to see what is going on.
They see Racheal’s friend Sadat jumping up and down.
Racheal runs out.
“What is it? Why are you shouting my name like that?” Racheal says frowning
“You won!” she shouts
“Won what?” Racheal says
“I sent a video of you making your fabric necklace to that children craft competition we saw on your brother’s phone last year.” Sadat explains
“But we were just playing with that video and I was shouting at you to not record it” Racheal replies
“What video?” James asks
Sadat leads everyone inside and hands an envelope to Racheal’s dad.
In the envelope is a letter congratulating Racheal for her creativity in making jewellery at such a young age. It also says that the organizers would want to pay for her schooling through secondary school and help her in her entrepreneurial journey.

Her parents are very happy and everyone takes turns hugging and congratulating Racheal.

5 years later
Racheal is seen walking into a big costume jewellery shop. At the top of the door is a sign that simply says ‘Racheal Jewelry’.
Racheal’s gift and love for using her hands creatively have made a way for her.
