PEGASUS REPORTERS, LAGOS | AUGUST 13, 2022

I listened with wrapt attention, your interview on Channels TV on Sunday, August 7th, 2022, where you publicly mentioned to Lagosians that the state spends an average of N1billion on a monthly basis to clear and get rid of refuse from the mega-city.

The fact remains, and reality maintains that for a mega city like ours, the amount of waste being generated is highly voluminous. It requires a good amount of labor and machinery to get them to the dumping or recycling sites.

But for such huge amount being spent on waste, that should place Lagos among the top-cleanest cities around the world, however, this is not the reality as we speak.

The attached photograph is the current state of Ago Palace way, Okota, Oshodi-Isolo Federal Constituency II, Lagos, Nigeria, where gabbage has decorated the entire road stretch, and this is an eyesore for a city like Lagos.

Further real-time investigations to ascertain if this situations are limited to just this area or elsewhere, I found out that there are similar and even worse sceneries of such in many areas across Lagos State.

As part of my request Your Excellency, I urge you to immediately deploy LAWMA, PSP and others saddled with the responsibility of waste management and control, to go and clear the refuse in these areas as swift as possible.

This is to avoid public health disaster, especially when we have not entirely eradicated the global pandemic COVID-19, other diseases like Monkey Pox, Cholera, e.t.c which can further put the lives of the citizens and residents of Lagos in danger.

I would also urge all Lagosians to continually avoid indiscriminate dumping of refuse in unapproved locations. This is because, apart from blocking our drainages during the rainy season, which could lead to flooding, it also poses a great threat to public health, affecting us all.

Thank you.
