Security: How Niger State Vigilante Men Mobilized and Vanquished 50 Bandits in Kainji National Park Hideouts

Tired of constant attacks, killing, stealing of the cattle, and raping of their women and men by bandits, vigilante men from across Niger state recently went for their pound of flesh when they storm bandits’ hideouts, wreaking havoc on the criminal, reports a source.

According to Leadership Newspaper Online, a local vigilante group at Ibbi Town, in Niger State, took the battle to the invaders of the community, killing no fewer than 50 bandits who had been terrorizing and kidnapping residents for ransom.

It was learnt that the villagers launched the attack on the bandits and destroyed their camps, which are at the bottom of a mountain within Kainji National Park, following the abduction of 12 people from their community about two weeks ago. According to the report, as a source from the community, who spoke under the condition of anonymity said the vigilante group, with support from their colleagues from the Niger South region, went after the bandits in a raid that started four days ago yesterday.

He said, “During the raid, the vigilantes lost two of their men, while the bandits killed nine of the 12 people in the captivity, and among the nine people that were killed, was a Sharia Court Registrar, who was abducted around Ibbi in Mashegu Local Government Area of Niger State.”

He said, “The registrar of the Sharia Court in Ibbi was killed, about six women and three men, but three other men were able to escape from them and as I am talking to you right now, the vigilantes have destroyed their camps, and chased them out of the national park. The vigilantes also dumped the bodies of the bandits at the Kainji National Park.”

A resident of the community told LEADERSHIP correspondent that, some bandits had taken over some unmanned parts of the National Park, from where they launched attacks on the people of the area.
