SGF George Akume: An Emerging Champion of the New North?

Formerly a decent and morally sanctified fortress of Nigeria’s integrity charter but now corruptly invaded, confused, and under siege, Northern Nigeria is becoming conscious of the need to revive and spiritually contextualize its past legacy of unity in diversity, diplomatic protocols, bequeathed as a permanent asset by its visionary and all-embracing pro-grassroots and talakawa farming communities governance founding father, Sir Ahmadu Bello, Gamji Dankwarai and the first patriarch of a monolithic Northern Nigeria, since the traumatic after-effects of the negative impunities of the colonial imposters’ external manipulation era!

However, since the demise of the famous champion of the North and first Premier of the Northern region, Sir Ahmadu Bello, Sardauna Sokoto, no one has come close to stepping into his big and magnanimously oversized shoes.

Now the giant Northern Nigeria is compelled by numerous contemporaneously related issues, to confront its global destiny and reassert its relevance as a united North, based on meritocracy scales of value and enduring adorations of fairness principles of co-efficient equilibrium, predicted by participatory democratic culture and guided by non-negotiable doctrine of a generic motto of “Work & Worship” that defines a collective allegiance to one indivisible and final God of all mankind.

Nonetheless, many people including this writer who is the founder and National Patron of the Northern Youths Assembly of Nigeria, NYAN, believe that, by his modest actions and practical convictions, the former Governor of Benue State, Mr. George Akume, and the current Secretary to the Government of the Federation, deserves to be officially identified as “Sardauna Karami” (meaning, the new arrowhead of the North) or to use an equivalent Yoruba title, Baba Kekere, bestowed to the late Governor of Lagos State, Alhaji Lateef Jakande as a tribute for his superlative loyalty and support for the iconic leadership vision and sustainable egalitarian mission of his mentor, the late Pa Chief Obafemi Awolowo, in the defunct Western region.

By all standards of protocols and basic attestations of human tolerance and cordial antecedents of established reputation and comparative affinity, the current Secretary to the Federal Government, Mr. George Akume is deserving of this vacant honor to lead the North and for these obvious facts and reasons, predicated by an undeniable religious verdict codified in all our Holy books, that a labourer is worth his labor’s worth.”

For almost three decades now, the former Governor of Benue State has proved himself as a truly committed and selfless political leader whose actions and policies stand him out as a silent but patriotic voice of the North and propelled by the desire and passion for the wholesome unity, cohesion, and oneness of the region. This he pursues, without any religious, ethnic, or political sentiment or consideration, unlike many other Nigerian politicians whose actions are guided by one political motive or another.

Take for instance, Mr. Akume’s stand and his position in 2014 when he openly criticized President Goodluck Jonathan over the $9.3m smuggled into South Africa via a private jet for facilitating an illegal arms procurement deal.

Although investigations revealed that Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, the President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) at that time was linked to the aircraft, Mr Akume nonetheless attacked the Government for causing embarrassment to Nigeria. Noteworthy is the fact that Akume is a practicing Christian and a member of the same ruling Party, PDP as President Jonathan at the time.

Therefore, all roads should lead to Benue State, in search of this super Northern Patriot, called George Akume!

Forget all the noise makers including the former Governor Ortom’s OBJ-type hateful madness against the Muslim North; forget some not all of those flippant and opportunistic Governors in the Nigerian Governors Forum-NGF and their fake loyalty and pretentiously dubious characters who pretend to be hardcore supporters of Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Initiative.

Why former Governor Akume of Benue State?

He is my favorite in terms of his absolute belief and solidarity for a united North, predicted on an indivisible Nigerian Nation as well as his uncompromisable opposition to retired General OBJ’s anti-North obsessions, particularly the infamous Third Term Agenda, whose high rating is second to none!

Unlike most of the dubiously clever Governors, Senators excetera who were engaged in exam malpractices which they display by secret plots of dining with OBJ and his Coalition forces who despise Buhari and now Tinubu, former Governor George Akume transformed Benue State into the most important venue for Northern unity where he hosted the entire Political elites and major stakeholders from the North more than 3 times, during which period he lambasted and chastised many of the so-called Pro-OBJ Boys, serving as Governors, Senators and what have you acting recklessly with misguided impunity as his corrupt marketers and unpatriotic disunity-proned salesmen to disengaged from promoting OBJ’S evil assignment which was an awesome secret project to destabilise and weaken the North. This was at a time when virtually most of the Governors and Senators, excetera, currently posing and pretentiously laying claims to being “Super Northerners and hardcore Muslims” were OBJ’s fanatical offshore Treasury looters who gave no damn about the devastating impacts of OBJ’s anti-North policy as we diabolical deceptions and nebellous underdevelopment!

Now, lets talk about commitments, not sentiments, who by spiritual attachment not by prurient orientation nor sentimental values, deserves to be given the greatest honour and recognition as super diligent Northern patriot?

Toying along this patriotic line was perhaps the late Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Victor Malu whose death wish, (he confessionally revealed to our former Nigerian Permanent Representative to the United Nations, His Excellency, Ambassador Ibrahim Gambari, Chief of Staff to former President Muhammadu Buhari, during a trip to his office at the Nigerian House in New York City, when he fondly expressed his best burning and passionate desire and inner wishes to hand over his Army Chief of Staff COAS position to the now deceased Kano/Jigawa State deceased General Nuhu Bamali, ADC to former President Babangida’s who died in a tragic Air Force unmaintained aircraft accident.

So, who says we cannot afford to engage a tried, tested and patriotically amiable trustworthy Christian brothers as our true Ambassadors of the North?
