Food Armageddon in Nigeria: The Role of Fulani Herders in the Destruction of Farmlands and Communities (Video Reports)

“This is why we are calling for the quick establishment of state police so that we can hold our governors directly responsible for breach of peace like these herders visited upon us. Our governors are said to be Chief Security Officers of the state but the best they know about fighting this crime is that one herder or kidnapper has been arrested and taken to the police. What happens after that, he cannot tell because the Inspector-general of Police does not owe him any report”

Unless the activities of wild herdsmen and terrorists nationwide under the guise of open grazing is contained by both federal and state government, the current food scarcity in the country will quadruple into a food armageddon exacerbating the already severe hunger and hardship in the land.

Reports from across the nation indicate that despite the support given to the police and armed forces to combat criminalities, there seems to a rise in herders attacks on farmland and kidnapping.

In this report from Edo state, a vigilante group and hunters tasked with bush combing have successful discovered and taken possession of a fulani herder and kidnappers den with an armoury, charms and bullet proof vests, dip in the forest in Esan-southeast. The video vide below says it all.

Speaking with Pegasus Reporters, a community chief who prefers anonymity said that while the gallantry of the vigilante groups in Edo state is encouraging since the police and armed forces seem to be complacent about the menace, hes is surprise that the Fulani group, Miyetti Allah is still defending open grazing in the country.
“This is what they have just done in this new planting season. The vandals do not stop at feeding our crops to their beasts, they still kidnap our people, rape our woman and kill anyone who resist them. In Urhonigbe in Orhiomwon local government in Edo state, the vigilante during the week discovered bodies of commuters killed by Fulani bandits who are hiding in the forest of edo state.”

In a similar incident in the Plateau State the video report shows a large hectare of corn farmland laid prostrate by herders as a soldier pursue the criminals.

A farmer who spoke with our correspondent in Jos has this to say: “If drastic action is not taken, hunger will continue and food shortages will trigger food stuff deficiency, inflation and even if minimum wage is one million naira, it will continue to be worthless as too much money will be chasing fewer goods”

All video reports were sent in by amateur photographers from affected communities to whom we owe the credit for the videos.
