Food Price Fixing & Sabotage: Ooni Ojaja II of Ife Bans Food & Traders’ Associations in Ile-Ife & Environs

“Before now, the police and customs were the major headaches to food merchants on the highways, but the surge in the number of local government and Area Boys along the roads have quadruple the cost of trafficking food from the North to the south. Governments should do something about it. I commend the Ooni of Ife. If government cannot do it, other traditional rulers should follow his example”

PEGASUS REPORTERS, LAGOS | JULY 16, 2024

In a shocking decision that many have expected of the Nigerian governments at all levels, the monarch of the ancient city of Ile-Ife, HRM, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi, Ojaja II has disbanded all market and food associations in his domain.

In a message delivered to the Iyaloja and the traders, the king’s emissary who spoke in Yoruba told the gathering in the market that rice, yams, garri, tomatoes, and pepper traders associations are immediately disbanded and prohibited for all times in Ile-Ife.

Speaking on this development, food seller in Lagos on hearing of this development told Pegasus Reporters that the federal and state government should have done this long time ago to check the rising cost of food in our market.

“I’m shocked that the Kaabiyesi has done what the government should have done since. The problem of high cost of food is caused by those market associations”

Speaking the same vein, an Iyaloja in one of the markets in Lagos has this to say: “it appears that Lagos state government is more interested in selling expensive stores to our members than how much we sell food. Someone should tell Governor Sanwo-Olu that many of us have stopped selling food not because the prices are too high but also because we cannot afford the cost of the newly built stores”

*The Ooni’s emissaries to the market disbanding all known market associations; e.g pepper sellers association, yam sellers, vegetable sellers; rice sellers; garri  sellers etc. This is to curb the unbearable hike in foodstuff prices. He also directed that henceforth, pepper; tomatoes, others should never again be parked at N500 rather should be from N100 as the most.

Speaking in a similar vein, a trader at the Mile Two market pleaded with the government to ban local governments touts who are ubiquitous on major roads as they are also responsible for the rise in prices of foodstuff. “Area boys and local government persons with all manner of taxes abound on our highways. You’ll be shocked how much they collect from a lorry load of food coming from the north to the south”

“Continuing he said, “Before now, the police and customs were the major headaches to food merchants on the highways, but the surge in the number of local government and Area Boys along the roads have quadruple the cost of trafficking food from the North to the south. Government should do something about it. I commend the Ooni of Ife. If government cannot do it, other traditional rulers should follow his example”
