The New York Times has reported that Hamas political chief, Ismail Haniyeh, who assassinated on Wednesday, was killed by an explosive device that had been smuggled into his guesthouse, Russia state-controlled media has reported.

Citing unnamed officials in the Middle East, the NYT claims a remotely detonated bomb was hidden in Haniyeh’s accommodation, part of a guarded compound in the Iranian capital, two months prior to his visit.

They go on to report that the device exploded in Haniyeh’s room, blew out some of the windows, and partially collapsed an exterior wall, citing two members of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps.

It was previously thought that Haniyeh had been killed by an airstrike, for which Hamas and Tehran have both blamed Israel.

Israel has so far neither confirmed nor denied involvement, although the NYT’s sources claim that ‘Israeli intelligence officials briefed the United States and other Western governments on the details of the operation’ in the immediate aftermath of the assassination.
