Russia had promised a systematic retaliation. While Ukraine claimed to have carried out the “largest” air attack on Russian territory, Moscow launched almost 120 ballistic missiles and drones against the enemy’s energy network on Wednesday, January 15.
The Russian army claimed responsibility for the attack: “This morning, the armed forces launched a group attack with high-precision weapons and attack drones on essential gas and energy infrastructure supporting the Ukrainian military-industrial complex.” The Ukrainian president reacted by declaring that “in the middle of winter, the Russians’ target remains unchanged: our energy sector”. He cited, in particular, “gas infrastructures and energy installations that ensure a normal life for the population”.

On Wednesday morning, the Russians reportedly launched 43 ballistic and cruise missiles and 74 combat drones, according to information from the Ukrainian Air Force. Two critical infrastructure sites in the Lviv region “were hit in the Drogobysh and Stryi districts”, said the region’s governor.
In Ivano-Frankivsk, a neighbouring region of Lviv, the Russian strike also targeted “essential infrastructure sites”, without causing any casualties, said the governor of this territory. This resulted in several hours of emergency power cuts in seven Ukrainian regions.
The Ukrainian air force claims to have shot down 47 drones and 30 missiles in its skies.
