Sylvie Bermann, former French ambassador to Russia, confirms that direct negotiations between the USA and Russia are “a victory for Moscow”.
Sylvie Bermann told Franceinfo that “Putin’s dream was to have a direct face-to-face meeting with the Americans”. She added: “I think it’s lost for Ukraine. What the Europeans wanted to do in Ukraine, which was to help Ukraine recover all the territories and push Russia back, I think it’s over.”
Still, according to the former French ambassador to Russia, Washington has every interest in recognizing Moscow’s annexation of Ukrainian territories already occupied, to put an end to the war. On the Russian side, the French diplomat points out that the country’s current economic situation “is not disastrous”, before specifying that “if they (the Russians) continue on this military path, they will gain nothing more and lose the opportunity to renew ties with the Americans”. Sylvie Bermann also points out that if the Russian president doesn’t achieve his objectives, she believes he won’t be able to “conquer the whole of Ukraine today”.
But how should the European Union, which wasn’t invited to the negotiating table, position itself? It must “prepare for what comes next, so that Europe can strengthen itself and create a defence industrial and technological base”… to act as a deterrent” to the Kremlin leader’s expansionist desires. “Maybe Putin doesn’t intend to attack, but it doesn’t matter, what’s important is precisely to recreate this deterrent.”
