AFRICA: Yaw Kissi Speaks to the Mind of the African Youths

As Dr. Kwame Nkrumah said: “The forces that unite us are intrinsic and greater than the superimposed influences that keep us apart.”

Dear Young Africans,

I know the world has taught you many things some true, many false. But today, I want you to listen closely: You come from the richest, most powerful continent on Earth.

Africa is not poor. Africa is not backward. Africa is the heartbeat of the world.

We are the continent that fed empires from the gold that built Europe’s cathedrals to the diamonds that built the West’s wealth.

Our people, our sweat, our blood, and our endless generosity have powered the engines of nations that now call themselves “developed.”

*African Youths

Let me share some facts they don’t teach you:

  • In the 1400s, Mansa Musa of Mali was so wealthy that his pilgrimage to Egypt collapsed Cairo’s economy for 12 years.
  • During the Transatlantic Slave Trade, Africa lost 12 million of her strongest sons and daughters building the economic foundations of the Americas and Europe.
  • Today, the Congo Basin provides over 70% of the world’s cobalt critical for smartphones, electric cars, and renewable energy.
  • Nigeria is one of the top five oil producers globally, yet millions of Nigerians live on less than $2 a day.
  • Ghana’s gold, Angola’s oil, South Africa’s platinum Africa fuels industries across the world.
  • China’s rise wouldn’t have been possible without Africa’s minerals.
  • Africa is the world’s backbone, yet they tell you otherwise.
  • Even after centuries of being exploited, we still survive. We are supposed to have vanished, but we rise, we live, and we stand tall.
  • *Dr. Kwame O. Nkrumah

Survival is no longer enough.
It’s time to build.
It’s time to dream.
It’s time to create.

As Dr. Kwame Nkrumah said:
“The forces that unite us are intrinsic and greater than the superimposed influences that keep us apart.”

As Thomas Sankara reminded us:
“We must dare to invent the future.”

And Patrice Lumumba, who gave his life for Congo’s freedom, said:
“Africa will write its own history.”

*The late Captain Thomas Sankara

That day is now.

We must begin by renewing our minds.
Leadership is our Achilles’ heel.
But leaders rise from within us.
We must see through the puppets.
We must identify true visionaries, support them, fight for them, defend them, and work with them.

Young Africans,
We have everything we need:
The gold, the land, the sun, the youth, the spirit.

We lack only the belief that it is ours to fix.

*Dr. Patrice Lumumba

To my black brothers and sisters in the diaspora,
I say: Africa is your home.
No matter where you were born, no matter your passport, this is your inheritance too.
Come. Build. Invest. Collaborate. Dream with us.

We don’t need to copy anyone else.
Africa must rise in its own image, in its own way, with its own destiny.

And we you and I are the architects.

This is your call. Your duty. Your moment.

The world has taken enough from us.
It’s time for Africa to reclaim her story.
It’s time for you to stand up and lead.

With hope, faith, and fire!
