Volunteer Teacher with Ajegunle Grammar School records 100% pass rate in Mathematics in 2024 WASSC

“I had the privilege of teaching over 90 students in the 3 arms of SSS 3. The students were a diverse group. Some were very eager to learn, some had already given up because they believed that mathematics was difficult, while some just didn’t care. It was tough, but I did my best to change the mindset of as many as I could”

PEGASUS REPORTERS, LAGOS | AUGUST 25, 2024

Unlike most Nigerians, he didn’t ask for a pay or any form of compensation. He was simply urged on by that zeal to share with the younger generation; to impact them with what he is endowed by the Almighty; the knowledge of mathematics! For this course Mr. Joseph Onokpe, went out in search for any higher secondary school that wanted his service, pro bono. Free as in FREE!

A week ago, he shared on his personal X handle this heading “I received a good news today” Now this is his story:

“Around 14:22 today, I received a call from the Principal of Ajegunle Grammar School, informing me that the school had achieved a 100% pass rate in mathematics in the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE)”

He also explained his journey to a life of personal sacrifice:

“Towards the end of 2023, I felt a strong desire to teach at a school but couldn’t pursue it due to my busy schedule.

“In March 2024, I made the decision to take action. The next question that arose in my mind was, “Where would the impact of my work be felt the most?” By the end of the month, I had found the answer to that question. I visited three public senior secondary schools and met with the respective principals. My request was simple: “I would like to volunteer as a mathematics teacher in your school.” In the end, only one school required my service.

“After submitting an official letter, I began as a volunteer intervention teacher at Ajegunle Grammar School in April 2024, assisting senior secondary school 3 students in preparing for the 2024 WASSCE, specifically in mathematics.

“I had the privilege of teaching over 90 students in the 3 arms of SSS 3. The students were a diverse group. Some were very eager to learn, some had already given up because they believed that mathematics was difficult, while some just didn’t care. It was tough, but I did my best to change the mindset of as many as I could.

“The attendance increased every day. Some days, I had to ask some students to leave because of their unruly behaviour, but I made sure to talk to them afterwards so that no one felt left out. I implemented strict measures along the way, and on some days, I had to relax the rules to encourage the few students who were on the verge of giving up.

“I didn’t just teach mathematics; I made sure to connect with as many students as I could. I seized every possible opportunity I got to share personal stories as well as those of my mentee Abubakar Usman who is a trailblazer despite his background. He also aced his exam. 🕺😇

“Today, I am thrilled that the sacrifice, prayers and pep talks have paid off. Honestly, I wasn’t expecting 100% success, but to my surprise, that’s exactly what happened. My heart is filled with joy. I am grateful to God, the students and the school management for giving me the opportunity to serve.
